Art Programs

In addition to a full range of classes in choral and orchestral music, percussion, and strings, NHS is proud of its after-school programs in marching band and drum line.

The Nolensville High School Orchestra Program provides NHS students with exceptional musical and educational experiences through structured rehearsal, professional-level performances, and creative collaborations.

The NHS Orchestra Program is comprised of two string orchestras that meet as regular classes during the school day, plus additional ensembles that meet after school. The Honors Orchestra is the top string ensemble at NHS and consistently earns Superior ratings at the annual MTSBOA Concert Performance Assessment. Considered an “Orchestra of Excellence” by the Tennessee Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, the Honors Orchestra performs standard orchestra repertoire. Membership is by audition. The Concert Orchestra is an upper-intermediate level string orchestra designed to serve as a bridge between the middle school orchestra experience and the NHS advanced ensembles. Students who do not audition into the Honors Orchestra are automatically placed into the Concert Orchestra.

The Symphony Orchestra consists of the combined Honors and Concert Orchestras, plus a by-audition woodwind, brass, and percussion section. The Symphony Orchestra performs on the NHS Orchestras’ Spring Pops Concert. String section members rehearse during regular class time, while woodwind, brass, and percussion members rehearse after school during the fourth quarter. The Pit Orchestra is a by-audition ensemble that performs in collaboration with the NHS Theatre Department’s Spring musical. Instrumentation for the Pit Orchestra is based on the demands of the selected production. The Pit Orchestra rehearses after school during the third quarter.

Additionally, NHS Orchestra members are encouraged to participate in local, regional, and statewide events, including Williamson County Honor Orchestra, Mid-State Honor Orchestra, and All-State Orchestra. Many NHS Orchestra members study privately with outstanding local and regional instructors and also participate in ensembles such as the Vanderbilt Youth Orchestras and the Tennessee Youth Symphony.

Nolensville High School's Theatre Program emphasizes genuine storytelling and encourages student development in all aspects of theatre related training. Emphasis in our program is on ensemble theatre, which promotes the understanding that no one participant is more important than another in telling a beautiful story together through theatre. Students take on leadership roles in every aspect of our productions from costumes and makeup to lighting and sound to management areas. Students have the opportunity to study all four years in the theatre pathway with Theatre I - IV and Technical Theatre classes, as well as being involved in the national honor society for theatre, the International Thespian Society, once they have achieved over 100 hours in theatre production credits.

The Nolensville High Visual Arts courses attract incredibly talented artists every year. Students may choose to pursue a sequential program in Fine Arts as their focus area for graduation.  This path may culminate with AP Art and Design, where students prepare a portfolio of work to possibly earn college credit.  Courses include Visual Arts I, II and III as well as AP Art and Design.
